Limonene
FORMULA: C10H16
M.W.: 136.23
Description:
Limonene is a colourless liquid hydrocarbon classified as a cyclic terpene. The more common D-isomer possesses a strong smell of oranges. It is used in chemical synthesis as a precursor to carvone and as a renewably based solvent in cleaning products.
Limonene takes its name from the lemon, as the peel of the lemon, like other citrus fruits, contains considerable amounts of this compound, which contributes to their odor. Limonene is a chiral molecule, and biological sources produce one enantiomer: the principal industrial source, citrus fruit, contains D-limonene ((+)-limonene), which is the (R)-enantiomer (CAS number 5989-27-5, EINECS number 227-813-5). Racemic limonene is known as dipentene. D-Limonene is obtained commercially from citrus fruits through two primary methods: centrifugal separation or steam distillation.

Applications:
It is used in chemical synthesis as a precursor to carvone and as a renewably based solvent in cleaning products is a compound with formula NaC3H5O3. It is the sodium salt of lactic acid and has a mild saline taste.
It is produced by neutralizing lactic acid, which is produced by fermentation of a sugar source. As a food additive, it has the E number E325. Sodium lactate is naturally a liquid product,
but is also available in powder form.Sodium lactate is commonly used in meat and poultry products to extend shelf life and increase food safety as it has a broad antimicrobial action and
is effective at inhibiting most spoilage and pathogenic bacteria. It may be used in shampoo products and other similar items such as liquid soaps.
